Bridges at Gulfside Dental

The first step to a healthy smile is to visit a preferred Naples dentist.

Besides making it embarrassing to smile, missing a tooth can lead to the following complications:

  • Difficulty while talking.
  • Teeth adjacent to the gap will eventually shift into it which makes chewing food harder.
  • Food will get stuck in this gap leading to plaque build-up, bad breath, tooth decay, and even gum disease.

All of these issues are reversible, but the treatments for each one will cost more time and money than a preventative treatment. Here at Gulfside Dental, our dentists offer bridges for missing teeth. This is a prosthetic tooth device that is cemented onto the existing teeth on either side of the gap left by a missing tooth. Similar to a crown, it is permanently installed in your mouth.

You may be a candidate for a brigde if you have had or need to have a tooth extracted due to decay or an accident. The main benefits are:

  • Removes stress from adjacent teeth by distributing the force of your bite evenly when you chew.
  • Restores your smile.
  • Eliminates the risk of nearby teeth shifting into the open gap.
  • If used in the front of your mouth, the bridge will make your speech clearer.

In order to be eligible for bridgework, you need to have strong abutment teeth, which are the teeth that the bridge will be attached to. If they aren’t strong the bridge may shift.

Bridgework takes 2 visits with our dentists. The process is four steps:

  • Abutment teeth are filed in preparation.
  • One of our doctors will take an impression, or mold, of your teeth to make a custom bridge.
  • A temporary bridge will be installed while we wait for your permanent one to be made.
  • The bridge is installed.

A dental bridge will normally last 10 years after installation by Gulfside Dental. The longevity of your your bridge depends on the strength of the teeth and gums it is attached to, so it is critical that you brush twice daily and floss at least once a day.

Post-Operative Instructions for Temporary Crowns & Bridges

  • Do not eat until the anesthetic wears off. Normally this takes a couple of hours, but can be longer. Some patients take more time for anesthetic to wear off and if you need to eat should try to consume foods you do not have to chew.
  • Expect some soreness or pain around the gum area for 24-48 hours. Over the counter medication should be sufficient.
  • Rinse with warm salt water for the first 24-48 hours.
  • When flossing the temporary crown, move the floss down and then pull out to the side, do not pull straight up.
  • If using an electric toothbrush, keep the power off around the area of the temporary.
  • Avoid hard or sticky foods.
  • Some sensitivity to hot and cold is normal, a temporary crown is a temporary solution to cover your tooth.

It is important to call our office if the temporary comes out, as it holds the space for the permanent crown and not having it in can cause issues for placement of the permanent crown.

If the temporary comes out or if you have any problems, please call our office.
